How to Enjoy Being Alone

Steps

  1. Be happy. Live a life of optimism. Happiness comes from within regardless of your situation, so don’t use any excuses, such as being alone.
  2. Do everything you would normally do with a partner or friend. Many times it isn't the partner or friend you are missing, but the activities and hobbies you shared. Take yourself out for a date. For example, if you would have gone out to dinner or to a movie on a date, then take yourself out to a movie or to a nice restaurant. Don't hold yourself back.
  3. Learn something new.

    • Learning is the most important aspect of living alone. It helps to keep the boogieman away, and also gives you something to talk about when you do have to actually enter society.
    • Learning is also incredibly more efficient when you don't have social responsibilities like family to take care of, or a girlfriend or boyfriend to entertain.
    • Learning isn't just exclusive to books (although they are a great source of knowledge). You can learn to do anything by just practicing. Enrolling in classes is fun and also helps with the social life - you will meet new people in your classes. If you're not so much into the meeting people, the Internet is a great way to learn pretty much everything (That's what this site's for!).
    • Consider learning: Indoor Activities: A Foreign Language, Painting, Yoga, Art Appreciation, A Musical Instrument such as piano or flute. Outdoor Activities: Gardening,Fencing, Tennis, Golf. Or Combination - things you can do indoors and out: Photography, Drawing.
  4. Get a pet.

    • Humans need affection, without it they become bitter and hate the world around them. Pets are always a source of affection and will give loads of it endlessly.
    • Pets also provide someone to talk to. No, it's not weird that you talk to your pet, it's weird if you don't. Just be cautious that your pet doesn't talk back. If so, seek professional help.
    • If you are aloof and self-sufficient, tropical fish, hamsters, budgies or finches are great choices. If you like a little interaction, but not a lot of maintenance, try a cat. If you want to be very hands-on, spend lots of time and get lots of feedback, a dog is for you.
  5. Read.

    • Now may be the time to catch up on some of your reading. Not only is it fun and enjoyable, but it's also self-education and a way to round yourself as a person.
    • Consider spending some time with classics such as "Moby Dick," "A Christmas Carol," "Romeo and Juliet," "The Martian Chronicles," or "Tales of Mystery and Imagination."
    • Or choose a genre to explore: Sci-Fi greats include "Stranger In a Strange Land," "Fahrenheit 451," and the "Dune" series. Horror: "Salem's Lot," "The Stand," and "Dracula." Fantasy: "Lord of the Rings," "Chronicles of Narnia," and "Harry Potter." Or just regular fiction: "East of Eden," "To Kill a Mockingbird," or "A Farewell to Arms."
    • Poetry is cool, too, and nothing makes you look cooler than when someone says, "Oh my God, you actually know that by heart?" Great poetry: "Charge of the Light Brigade," "Ulysses," "She Walks In Beauty," "How Do I Love Thee," and Shakespeare's Sonnets - #29 is great!
  6. Join an on-line community.

    • One of the most popular online societies is that of World of Warcraft, but there are several on-line multi-player games that will welcome you with an abundance of online buddies.
    • Don't limit your online activities to just games. Join forums or chat rooms to meet new people also. Take whatever you're interested in and find other people like you.
  7. Think. Be introspective. Contemplate or ponder things.

    • Above all, contemplation is one of the most important self-building things you can do. Think about what makes you you. What do you believe in? Why? Are there any things that don't seem right to you? What do you believe at face value (or accept as a matter of faith)?
    • Philosophy is a great way to improve your thinking and reasoning skills. It will give you interesting topics that will stretch and bend your brain to help you understand your view of reality. Keep in mind that just because someone believes in something it doesn't mean you have to if you don't like it.
    • Philosophers: Socrates, Plato, Nietzsche
  8. Exercise.

    • Now is the time to get that body you've always wanted. Instead of just pigging out on junk food and sitting in front of the TV all night, do some push-ups or sit-ups.
    • Rediscover the fun to be had in simple exercises. Riding a bike around your neighborhood becomes less work and more fun as you do it.
    • Be consistent. Exercise takes willpower and diligence. Make a schedule and stick to it. Keep it easy at first and you will discover your limits. Or, join a gym and create new friends there.
  9. Listen Lots of Music. If you are a diehard music fan Then you can enjoy being alone by listening Rammstein (R+), Metallica, Tatu, Guns N Roses, Dj Tiesto songs depends upon your taste, whether it is Metal, Trance, Rock, or pop.
  10. Go outside. It's a big world out there, and you're only seeing a small fraction of it. Forget the people, just enjoy what life has to offer. Once you do that, then people will want to know and be with you. Frankly, you won't have a choice but to have friends!

Tips

  • Be careful of who you trust. Don't be too eager to meet someone you just met on-line. Try to always meet in a public place and it's best to bring along someone you trust.
  • Keep your mind as active as possible. It will help you cope with the fact that you are alone and will also help you improve yourself.
  • If you're going to go out, make sure your neighborhood is safe. If not go to a safer neighborhood.
  • Have fun, don't let the little things get to you.
  • Let go. Don't think about being alone, just accept it.

How to Have Fun Alone

So, you're by yourself? No friends around, no parents around...no one but you! Don't sit there being lonely and bored! Enjoy that "me time".

Steps

1. Have you caught up on everything you need to catch up on? The best thing about "me time" is you're not going to have any interruptions. So, catch up on that English paper, study for that history test next week, clean your room, and work on that science project. Use this time to your advantage.
2. Go outside and enjoy nature. You'll be surprise how fun and relaxing watching the clouds go by can be.
3. Pamper yourself. Since you're by yourself, now you can finally give yourself that manicure and pedicure. Arch your eyebrows (but avoid over-arching due to boredom) and give yourself a facial. Take a nice warm bubble bath.
4. Take lots of random pictures. Take the most random pictures of yourself; pictures of your feet, pictures of you acting silly and sticking your tongue out or the kitchen sink. This is a great way to just have fun!
5. Read a book! Find a nice comfy spot, with a cold glass of sweet tea and read, read, read! It doesn't even have to be a book, it can be the latest issue of a magazine.
6. Pop in a movie, make some popcorn and have a "movie night".
7. Experiment in the kitchen. Make a new fruit smoothie or funny shaped pancake! Let your inner chef be revealed!
8. Turn on some music and dance in front of the mirror.
9. Go in your closet and mix and match your clothes. You can have fun just playing dress-up.
10. Go on the Internet and re-do your Myspace page or website, play with your Neopets, play games, catch up on the latest celebrity gossip on-line or edit on wikiHow!
11. Write in your notebook. Write a poem, draw a picture, write a letter to someone (or even yourself), make a list of things you want to do in your life or just write down a shopping list.
12. Reorganize your room!
13. Do you have a pet? Go walk your dog. Exercise in the house if it's raining by working out to music!
14. Make a scrap book.
15. Call someone you haven't heard from in a while.
16. Read. Reading is a very good way to pass the time when there is something that interests you. You will eventually become hooked on the book and lose track of time. This will make it seem to go by quicker and you will be enjoying yourself.
17. Drive somewhere fun; go to the mall and look around shops, you don't have to buy anything if you don't want to, you can just browse through things and see what there are. Maybe drive to the beach and spend your day getting a tan or swimming. You could drive to the movie theaters and see a movie or go to a park, enjoy the fresh air, and think about things. The possibilities are endless!
18. Watch some tv. You could watch a sports station if that's what interests you, you could watch MTV which always has some interesting reality show on or some music. Maybe move your TV into your kitchen and turn on the food network and make something, there are a lot of different things that could spark an interest in you!
19. Listen to music. There are so many genres and sub genres that finding something you like will be easy. You could go to Myspace music and look through the genres there or go to Youtube and search for a band you've heard of or a rap artist. With music you can do more then listen to it, you can listen to the lyrics and try to interpret what they mean, you could try to learn how to play the instruments from the song on guitar, bass, drums, or maybe you could just sing the words from the song! Dance to the music, sing with it, play air guitar, or you could just sit in a big comfy chair, look out the window and eat some chips and just chill for a little. It will be very enjoyable and you will pass the time.
20. Exercise. Jog around the house with your music, or outside on the side walk, or on a treadmill. Do some push ups, stand on your ankles or toes for a long time or you could sit against the wall. There are many other articles saying good exercise ideas.
21. Meditate. There's nothing quite like it.
22. Travel to foreign places. Without a friend telling you where to go and what do, the sky is the limit!
23. Take up a sport. So often there is something we've always wanted to do, but we've been waiting for other people to do it with. Life is short. Just do it. There are plenty of groups you can join, where you'd meet more like-minded people anyway...
24. Write a book. The time may never come again when you will have such perfect aloneness - so make the most of it.
25. Start painting, needlework, knitting, pottery, or some other form of craft-making.
26. Think great thoughts without someone interrupting them with chatter.
27. Observe other people. Groups of people are especially interesting...
28. Play a video game! They put you into a different world where you live another life. Already have the game? Play it online! Go register online and buy the cheapest of any possible online package (To see if you like playing online with other people from around the world), and play multiplayer. Still bored or online play not an option? Ask yourself "Have I beaten this game on the hardest difficulty? Have I achieved all the side missions and goals, or have I attained my own personal agendas?" If the answer is no, give the game another play through, and try new things.
29. Dance. Celebrate your aloneness - you can do whatever you like!
30. Tired of doing your hair the same old way? Try coming up with new ways to style your hair! Come up with enough styles to do your hair differently for a week, or even a whole month!

Tips

  • These are just ideas; there's no end to all the fun things you can do!
  • If you don't like any of the ideas above, then do what you like to do and have fun with it!
